Gemma Carey: A Memoir {Canberra portrait photographer}

Associate Professor Gemma Carey is an author and researcher. Hair and Makeup by Katie Sarikko

Her memoir, “No Matter Our Wreckage” is being published by Allen and Unwin.  It is a memoir about grooming, betrayal, trauma and love. I must admit when I read the précised on the back cover it made to stop and reassess how I wanted to make the portraits. I needed to create something with depth.

“A ground-breaking, uncompromising and unflinching memoir about grooming, intergenerational trauma, grief and love.

My mother knew I was abused as a child. She had read letters sent from my abuser to me…But she never spoke to me about them, or what they described. And she never intervened to stop the abuse…Now she is dying and the past is rising to the surface like a bruise.”

I was commissioned by Allen and Unwin to make some portraits for the promotion of the book.

and who could forget Gemma’s beautiful girl Mabel!

Here is the book cover. It is launching in September.
